hippichick | Why does anybody suppose some people make a statement, usually a hurtful or disturbing one and say "just kidding?" They when you call them on their **** the "victim" is made the bad guy. Saying things like "dont take me so seriously", when one could not help to take the statements seriously? Especially when such statements are directed directly at the "victim?" What degree of insecurity, messed-up-in-the headness, could contribute to this behavior? thanks~~~ t~~~ |
TxGirl | They are probably speaking what they really think but are afraid to be honest or just being mean. But, it depends on the context and the conversation. Sometimes I genuinely am kidding, and when I am I say so. I'f I'm not I don't say I am. |
Deux*Antares | Is it true that jokes are half-meant? |
Ami Anne | I think that if your gut says someone has bad motives, they do. Our guts are rarely wrong ------------------ Jesus never put his trust in man cuz he knew what was in man. He who controls his Spirit is greater than he who controls a city Proverbs |

I think so. So I rarely joke. |

Is it a form of passive aggressive behavior? I rarely trust any statement that ends a sentence with "just kidding" ------------------ ~The Earth Laughs In Flowers~ ... Emerson |
hippichick | Thank you all for your replies, and I agree with all. Maybe people who do this realize they have cast out venom and "just kidding" is their way out for them emotionally. Lexx I totally agree, I dont joke either, cept for very lightly and never with matters that could hurt. .t |

Yes, joking can really hurt. I don't want to hurt people. There is too often a fine fine line betwixt joking and a veiled insult.

Lonake | Just kidding is always a lie, imo. They meant it but they don't have the balls to own it |
T | First off, Hi hippi! Long time no 'hello'! Hope all is okay with you. Second, about the subject matter.....well, yikes...I say 'just kidding' a LOT and so does everyone else where I come from ( a pretty sarcatsic area - Boston ) (great people too, though)... Maybe I've grown a thick skin because of it...also think it might be age group related.? "Just kidding" after a sentence doesnt bother me one bit. It's almost normal with people Ive known. Quick and sharp tongues.... I have to agree that Lonake is onto something though. Maybe different parts of the country breed more sensitive people..... I'm pretty thick skinned anyway, so I shouldnt talk. Always surprises me what people deem offensive... Anyway, love to you girly. |
MoonWitch | I told my 12 year old son today "hey, get ready because I need to go to Victoria's Secret to buy new bras!" When he looked horrified... I said "just kidding! I'll be back in an hour." A world without humor and joking around is a sad place. That's why I divorced my boring, dull and humorless ex.

hippichick | Lonake: I LIKE it!Hey T!!! ~~~ I kid too, lightheartedly have fun, etc. but I am talking about when someone insults another, or says things that are just inappropriate, then back it up with "just kidding." I guess I should just not believe everybody so much and not trust so easily maybe I take things too personally, dunno! t~~~ |
Randall | I'm more concerned with they don't say they are kidding. ------------------ "All deaths are suicides, do you realize that? Every single one. The only distinction is that, with some people, suicide is a subconscious choice, and with others it's a conscious choice. Otherwise, those who commit suicide and those who succumb to accident, illness or "old age," die for exactly the same reason: belief in the inevitability of death." Linda Goodman |
Cynnared | If the "Joke" hurts somebody's feelings then it's not even a joke at all, more of an insult. I know a few local comics who will insult an audience member and that is not cool with me. This one comic asked the audience for a Phil Collins song. Somebody answered and this person was called a loser. |
ghanima81 | This is so topical to me, you have no idea. My roommate's sister made a comment on her gf's profile picture on FB and she got really offended about it and popped on chat to vent to me. I normally don't defend her sister, she is a "jellyfish" person and has a bad case of verbal diarreah. BUT, in this instance, she was honestly trying to make a joke and not be mean spirited. I explained that she might be taking it too personally, but that I understood where she was coming from as well. I told her to pick her battles though, as she knows what her sister is like, and that she will inevitably tell her she is taking it too personally and they will get in a little fight about it, when that's just how her sister is and is it really fair to expect her to change her personality. It's a tough one. I am luckily a fairly airy person and am capable of seeing all sides of a situation and being pretty objective. It really depends on the context, the person, and the level of the "joke". |
Randall | Sometimes it's obvious. |
